Located at 123 Cargill St, very close to Dunedin's City Centre and near to both the hospital and university, Workstay@123 and its partner business Travel stay City Hostel have provided high quality affordable accommodation for both business and holiday travelers (Local or international) since 2022. Work Stay@123 operates as a hostel/private hotel due to some guest rooms having shared bathroom facilities. However, six of our eighteen rooms have full facilities and private bathrooms. We do not provide dormitories, bunks, or family rooms. Our property is adults only.

Guest rooms and amenities

All guest rooms have kitchenettes with microwaves and fridges along with basic cutlery and crockery for guests to make simple meals in their rooms. Downstairs there is a large double full facility kitchen open from 6am to 10pm. This kitchen is where all guests can make larger meals or simply have toast and coffee. We provide a selection of free breakfast cereals, toast and spreads, along with milk and hot and cold drinks. After making a snack (or full meal) guests can go to the lounge to dine or to relax and take in the amazing view of the inner city and harbor. If the weather is nice, we have extensive gardens and outside sitting areas where guests can relax, admire the view and listen to the birdlife.

Parking

We provide ten free onside parks. Parking must be reserved prior to or on arrival. Parking on Cargill St, just below our property is free 24/7, but it can vary in availability due to our inner-city location and many students and CBD workers parking there during the day.

History

Originally built in 1881 and sited on a large plot of land, the main building has recently undergone extensive internal renovations with external landscaping, exterior painting and increased car parking planned for 2026. The large two-storey room house, originally built of timber, was plastered over in the 1920s thus unfortunately losing much of its original character and stunning verandahs. Fortunately, some original features such as the 140-year-old glass lead-light palladium window above the staircase and the front entry foyer remain intact. The property has an extensive history of being a boarding establishment for early Otago settler university professionals, a wedding/event restaurant, a travel hotel in the 1960s and more recently ‘Hazelwood Travel Lodge’ an eighteen-room student boarding house for international students.
